"No Fault" divorce finally to be introduced in April 2022

The Ministry of Justice has announced that the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020, which will allow married couples to be granted a divorce without assigning blame, will have a commencement date of 6 April 2022.

This is the result of decades of campaigning to reform the divorce laws.

Currently, married couples seeking a divorce must rely on the fault of the other party for the marriage breakdown citing their unreasonable behaviour or adultery, or alternatively wait for a minimum period of two years separation before issuing divorce proceedings.

At Judge & Priestley we aim to resolve matters as amicably as possible and this ground-breaking reform in the law should really help to reduce conflict between the parties and enable them to prioritise the important issues such as the financial settlement and arrangements for the children.

If you are considering divorce or separation, please contact Katie Wilson at kwilson@judge-priestley.co.uk or one of the other solicitors in the family department for a free 30 minute initial consultation.
