Q. What is probate?
A. Probate is the court's authority given to a person(s) to administer your estate. The person granted probate will be responsible for wrapping up the affairs, paying all the bills and distributing the assets to those entitled to it.
Q. Do I need a Grant of Probate?
A. This often depends, and if in doubt see a solicitor who will be able to advise you. However normally you can deal with the following assets without a Grant:
Life assurance policies written into a trust, joint assets, nominated assets, death benefits under a pension trust.
